My Sister's Closet of Monroe County
My Sister's Closet provides at-risk women living in poverty with the training and resources to move closer to life success by helping them find employment.
As a non-profit thrift boutique, we support most of our mission through the resale of in-kind donations to the public. Inside My Sister's Closet you'll find pieces that are both fabulous and fashionable. The majority of our mission is supported by people shopping at our boutique. So please shop, we'd love to see you!
To date, over 2,800 clients have been assisted with professional services, interview clothing, and job skills training. 85% of these women find new jobs or better employment within six weeks.
Relocation Support: MSC needs assistance from donors and supporters to help us relocate our services. While our lease have been extended an additional eight months, it is scheduled to end December 2024. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to us at: Director@SistersCloset.org
Open T-F 10am-6pm; Sat 10am-5pm.
It all started when our Executive Director saw a 1997 episode of 60 Minutes, highlighting the New York nonprofit, Dress for Success. This nonprofit had found that providing professional jackets to their clients increased their chances of gaining employment. This episode inspired our Executive Director, who was already doing pro-bono interview and resume consulting to women who walked into her business, Absolute Secretary, looking for guidance.
Combining the work that she was already doing with the Dress for Success mission, our Executive Director pitched the idea of My Sister's Closet to other Bloomington nonprofits at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. The idea was approved, and four months later a clothing drive was held for professional clothing. Through an advertisement by The Herald-Times, this clothing drive was incredibly successful!
From this 1998 clothing drive, we have grown into a self-funded nonprofit that has served over 2,800 clients in the span of 25 years.
