Posts, tweets and photos about current projects and new work keeps people up to date with what I'm doing. To seek out a target market, I have learned that in order to develop relationships with the people who need my services, I had to start creating conversations with these people in the places where this target audience already goes. For example if I'm doing headshots for actors, I would simply go to the actors groups and forums and comment on posts they create, offer feedback on topics they discuss and ask questions regarding their work and their profession. The objective is to just be present on the forums where the clients are and work on developing relationships. One job will lead to the next and word gets around quickly if you are doing good work and providing a decent value for your clients.

If I am stagnant and not doing any new creative work or actively marketing, my bookings become slim. Other professions may be different, however in my business I have to be actively making new projects and looking for new opportunities all the time. I also have to keep myself busy with customer service, networking, and building relationships that will sustain a healthy stable of clients.

I just let everyone know I wanted to help them upgrade their images. The word gets around and someone always knows someone who is in need of extra help. I put a little effort into making a lot of introductions and developing friendships at events, parties and simply passing out my business card while socializing. One job usually leads to the next so I would always ask my clients if they could refer me to anyone they knew who could use a little help.
