Sending cold emails to “prospects” is a waste of time. Delete, unsubscribe. The quality, more than the quantity, of your list is the determining factor of email marketing success. It takes time to build a quality list of warm leads, i.e., qualified prospects.
My list consists primarily of subscribers to my blog. You can also harvest prospects’ email addresses when they trade business cards with you; when they sign up to receive your blog, newsletter, or case study; when they RSVP to the announcement of your appearance in a webinar or the workshop you’ll teach; when they email to ask questions about your products or services.
When you trade business cards with a colleague, mention that you publish a blog and/or newsletter and ask if they’d like you to send him/her a copy. Tell them, with a smile, that you include an opt-out button if they’re inclined to use it.

For almost as long as I’ve been in business as an Independent Strategy & Marketing Specialist, I’ve sent December holiday cards to everyone I worked with over the previous 4-5 years. A few years ago, I began to also send a nice little gift ($30 or less) to clients I’m currently working with, or have worked with over the past 12-18 months.
This is the time to show gratitude and nurture relationships. Moreover (dare I say it!) I want to always enhance the customer experience, enhance my brand and position myself at top-of-mind to receive referrals and repeat business.
If any of you would like some inspiration on client gifts to buy, visit my profile and find my post “10 Under $30: Holiday 2021 Client Gifts” (I don’t make money from purchases and whenever possible I don’t link to the billionaire Bezos site).
At the tail end of FY2021, I hosted a small in-person networking event and it was successful. Light hors d’oeuvres provided, cash bar. My guests were happy to be there and I think the ROI will be good.
