That is a good question. I have hired a number of employees and have let some of them go. The best employees regardless of position all had a strong work ethic, were honest and loyal. The very best employee, I trained in multiple jobs and she always had my back, was ready to roll on whatever project we undertook and always put forth her best effort even under less than desirable circumstances. That willingness to undertake the difficult and undesirable projects with the same commitment to quality and standards made her a stand-out employee. Oh, and she always gave me her opinion even if we differed which I valued. It is a relationship.
