About Us
Furniture Refinishing:
Working with both designers and home owners I am able to take furniture from any era and transform it to its once beautiful state by either chemically removing the old finish (never dipped) and re-staining it and apply new clear top coats. I'm also able to paint, or paint glaze, and distress if you so desire.
Furniture Repair:
This includes basic repairs to everyday items like chairs and tables, however sometimes reproducing new parts to a piece is required.
Custom Built Furniture:
Dinning and occasional tables are my specialty. Using any wood specie, and can make a table using a number of different leg profiles and custom finished to your specifications.

The cost seemed to be on a sliding scale of what Thumbtack seemed to think the job would cost. I was also very selective on the types of work I would be on. That allowed me a more successful selection rate.
To start with Trust!
Especially if you use sub contractors as part of the service you provide. Sub-contracting is a necessary part of my business to manage turn around time. Without that relationship if would be difficult.

I've had some good success with Thumbtack, while it is not perfect the ratio of dollars spent on points to the increase in jobs gained has been well worth it to me.
After reading some of the reviews below my take away is that it's clearly not for everyone. In the scope of work that I do It's competitive but not very competitive, and it has worked well for me.
I wish Thumbtack had a better way of qualifying people. Because I do furniture refinishing, repair, and build custom furniture, I really need to see a picture and detailed information to quote. Almost no one ever sends a photo.
It would be nice if Thumbtack would require anyone wanting a quote for furniture refinishing and repair to upload a picture before they send there request. If I could reply to a quote and say please send a photo and I will be happy to quote without using points I would probably send out more quotes!
I also wish I could send a note that says your budget is not in scope with the work that your requesting, would you like to adjust your budget? This might get you work from quotes that you may have passed on simply because some people have no idea what something costs!
I realize my process for qualifying a new client won't work for everyone or every trade that uses the service.
My approach for quoting is to carefully read the description and most importantly the budget. Many folks are just tire kicking to get a price. They don't realize or care that it costs us points to quote.
I've setup templates for several different scenarios. When there budget is in a range I work in for a particular piece. I send a very nice note stating:
" Your estimated budget is in the range that I work in for your type of project. It's very helpful when I'm able to see a picture of the piece/s to give you a more accurate quote. Are you able to send me some photos?"
I will only send a quote if there budget makes sense. If someone is serious about a project they will state a realistic budget and they will send you pictures. I will never send a quote without seeing a picture. It doesn't make sense in my line of work, not to mention you could shoot yourself in the foot by being to high or to low.
So if you have been contacted by a potential client offer your phone number and email address to them along with a link to your website if you have one. In my case I post pictures of all of my before and after work on my business Facebook page. I direct people to www.facebook.com/furniturefixer to view my work. Many people find communicating through Thumbtack cumbersome and confusing. I've found that once I am able to speak with a potential client I have a much better chance of getting the job. We are all passionate about our business and that can come through in a phone conversation.
A client wants to hear confidence in your voice and that you are the very best in your trade!
I hope this was helpful to those that have read this.
