I agree with Ms. Meade - what a layperson may think is a common-sense phrase may have unintended meanings to a court, and the whole idea of signing a contract in the first place is to have a document you can bring to a court if someone doesn't keep to its terms.

Although you did not say how long you have been at this position, or go into detail about the "privileged" behavior, I would suggest contacting an employment attorney - it is not uncommon for family-run businesses to pay short shrift to the requirements of employment law, and some of the "privileged" behavior, particularly if it negatively impacts your work environment and/or ability to do your job, may support a claim against the company.

Trying to handle small legal matters (forming the company, contracts, etc.) themselves rather than consulting with an attorney. Many times, a little (and easily avoidable) mistake in these documents can cause big problems later on. A corollary is not documenting dealings with customers, suppliers, etc. - a large part of business litigation in my area stems from "handshake agreements" gone bad.
