I know, as a provider, this will sound biased, but I couldn't disagree with that idea more. Payroll is NOT a simple process. There are a lot of complex rules and processes that need to be followed. It is also complicated for small business owners, who do not have a dedicated experienced payroll person and more often than not, mistakes happen because of that. You do need a reliable knowledgeable business partner who are there for you. I recently converted a new client who was using a very cheap payroll service. When I got his account, we discovered that there were major delays in the tax payments, no identifiable pay structure, unfiled and late filed reports and more. This was a company with just 1 employee. We ended up paying close to $600 in unpaid taxes and penalties.
" What you pay is what you get" certainly applies. It is important to see how quickly you can reach your provider. How quickly your questions are answered or your problem is resolved? Do your provider know you and your business ? Or are you just another account number? It makes a difference....
