After 10 years in the business, I've learned that if you aren't adapting to the way clients search, and being found in those searches, you're most likely approaching the end of your business life cycle. By then, it could be too late.
We've been lucky... a lot of repeaters every year and they tell their friends. Something about being "The best boss ever" helps to bring University students in early April. It gets harder in the fall but we manage. We promote on Facebook too, which helps. Kijiji is too expensive but returns...

I've been testing both. So far the results are about equal. Targeting accurately seems to be the most critical in setting up the ads.

Prior to the key season we advertise on Kijiji and post signs in high end residential areas. The BEST return comes at no cost from neighbours in the area where successfully installed projects are completed. Nothing says "This company does professional work" better than a homeowner who is proud to...

Prior to the key season we advertise on Kijiji and post signs in high end residential areas. The BEST return comes at no cost from neighbours in the area where successfully installed projects are completed. Nothing says "This company does professional work" better than a homeowner who is proud to have our sign on their lawn. We clean up their property as though the install has been there for years. Referrals score the largest return as the cost, other than consultation time, are negligible.
