In my mind, a networking event is to build relationships. The saying goes, "People do business with people they know and like".  At an event spend time talking to a few people rather than "working the room".  A few meaningful contacts can result in an appointment for coffee to get better acquainted.  Once people feel comfortable with you, the business will come.  Also ask what YOU can do for THEM..not what they can do for you....you will be surprised at their reaction and willingness to help.
