I am an embalmer and funeral director, and the families we serve will become our extended family for life.

Giving a loved one back to a family that would otherwise have had a closed casket. This ability and gift is the most rewarding and without God giving and guiding me with this ability, I would be nothing. I never want to say these words, "I'm sorry, but we will have to keep the casket closed and highly suggest no private viewing from any family members." I haven't had to say them yet, and there are many scenarios and the approaches that were used but some things are better left unspoken. I do pray that I will always find a way, and there are many times I have had to think outside the box, even impressing my mentors. If it were me and I lost my child, I would want,... no, I would NEED this and that is what drives me to spend countless hours over a loved one to be certain they are perfect for their final goodbye. I always hear, "Wow, she looks 30 years younger" or "She only looks like she is sleeping and could sit right up and start talking to me" "He doesn't look in pain now and is so peaceful". This is what I strive for because of the way the family feels when they go home after it is all over and the body is peacefully at rest. They feel peace as well because of this and their memory is not of a sick, dying woman that appears dehydrated and 30 lbs below normal weight, it is exactly what they remember their Momma looking like 30 years prior. This is the closure we need and what needs to be instructed in our mortuary programs. I would love to instruct the art and the simplicity of how to do things correctly so everyone would have this experience.
