I wish I had known to have more money in the bank before starting.   Of course, you can never have too much, but you can definitely have too little.   Also, I wish I had lined up additional/back-up vendors for when I needed to change vendors for whatever reason. (more) In your line of work and industry, convenience is not always possible or desirable.   My generation (Baby Boomers) accepts the fact that car repairs - when done correctly - sometimes take several hours, perhaps even days.   We also know that we have the responsibility to take care of ourselves if we have to be without our transportation for any length of time.   Generations that have come after us, particularly Millennials and Gen-Z, expect immediate service and gratification even when immediacy is not the best solution for the situation.   (I'm not bashing these two groups, just making a statement that most people already know).   To get back to customers buying into convenience..... 1)  Be upfront about the estimated time of repair.    Offer transportation options (free ride to work, partnering with a car rental place, free public transportation pass) when the repair is going t0 take more than a few hours. 2)  Offer free Wi-Fi if the customer is willing to stay in your waiting room while repairs are being made. 3)  Create a comfortable space for your customer waiting area, and have a nice coffee machine so they can get coffee. 4)  When talking to your customer, don't focus so much on the problem/repair; instead focus more on how much better a car will run or look once you are finished with the repair. 5)  Publicize your business with flyers or mailers and include these extras and intangibles as part of your advertising. Hope these suggestions help you. Stephen

(more) My heart goes out to this woman who is trying to work through her grief and at the same time help others who have experienced a similar loss.   Having lost a son, also, I know firsthand the debilitating effect the loss of a child can have on a person.   Your desire to be a comfort and help to others is admirable, but remember, before we can take care of others, we need to take care of ourselves.  If donations aren't coming in with the effort you are putting into the program, and from an emotional side you aren't able to give any more effort, then perhaps the time has come to allow someone else to take over or to suspend the charity until you are able physically and emotionally to start it up again.    If you do start the program up again, I would suggest creating an actual non-profit entity, having some money in the bank, and lining up donors before you begin offering the service to other parents.    This would alleviate the problem of having people waiting for the help you have advertised. Again, my heartfelt sympathy to this grieving mother.
