I do not charge for the first contact. If I am interested I offer to provide a free estimate that is financial complete but is not yet designed. I come home and contact them about a second in person meeting to go over the content of a complete Kitchen estimate. If they accept a 2nd meeting I...

I do not charge for the first contact. If I am interested I offer to provide a free estimate that is financial complete but is not yet designed. I come home and contact them about a second in person meeting to go over the content of a complete Kitchen estimate. If they accept a 2nd meeting I fill out the allowance estimate and keep the appointment, if they are seeking several bids they will not make and appointment and I do not put additional time into them. If the money is acceptable the I will do the 10 + hours of design work for a non refundable commitment fee. I never Email a complex bid as this invites the tire kickers the will attempt to get 10 bids. Not emailing is a time waster but I think it weeds out the the time wasters that want to get 20 estimates. I costs me 1 hour not 10. Only the person that respects your time is a customer. The universal problem in contracting is today is potential clients wasting your time. I would like to hear how others prevent time abusers.
