Being able to see what you're doing at any given time is always a good thing.
I don't fire them and I yell less... But seriously, for Birthdays (and Christmas or Hanukah) we give gifts or cash. Baked goodies, and a card (usually handmade). It's a family atmosphere as we're a tiny tiny little company.
