This shutdown is just bringing to light what a lot of businesses risk, but don’t know it, until something like this happens. For you, I think this shutdown will be over, sooner, rather than later, and you can get back to business as usual - but a bit wiser. With so much of your business dependent of the government you will always have this risk that can have a negative effect on your business. Diversifying is important going forward. Spend some of this time exploring those options. When the shutdown is over, you won’t have as much free time to explore those options. Also, in the meantime, this shutdown is likely affecting your customers who are waiting on government approvals, so why don’t you reach out to them and see how you can help them during this time so that when things are normal they will be ready to roll. Regarding your mom, local agencies are where I would seek help. A Local Senior Center should have lots of information to get help. Also, someone in your church may be available to help out if you don’t have any family, neighbors or anyone else to help out.

Nothing as severe as your story, but to the point I had to face the fact that I had to do something.  First, I would say, you need to talk with your accountant. Preferably she/he is a CPA who is well versed in advising businesses. She/he will knowledgeable about your business and the options you have available. Your age, current workforce (didn’t know if you had anyone currently) and business forecast are just a few of the variables that should be considered in reviewing your options. Hiring new staff may just bring added stress and create a financial strain, if the business can’t support it or if you get the wrong person. Finding talent you are going to be able to rely on will be tough, and you will need to protect yourself with proper agreements, so that the new face doesn’t walk off with the store at some point. Your advisor may also know of a similar business who may be willing to help you thru this time period as well. Good luck and fast recovery.

Then a friendly visit where you remind them of the work you did and ask them if there is a problem. If they can’t pay in full, get a commitment to make regular payments of some kind. Be friendly, professional but firm about your need to get paid.

That’s a tough one. It generally depends on the feedback I get from the homeowner. They tell me what is important to them. I love following up with photos of our work. I think it gives them confidence about the work we will do for them. (more) That’s a tough one. It generally depends on the feedback I get from the homeowner. They tell me what is important to them. I like to slip in two questions. One, why do you want to come work with us and two, what do you expect our company to do for you in this position.
