I recommend you take a look at your overall marketing strategy and decide what marketing channels are right to reach your target market. Digital may or may not play a large role in your immediate plan - or your approach may be phased and change over time. I'm not in your area, but would be happy to have a 20 minute call to see if we can come up with some ideas for you to pursue with an advisor local to you. Just private message me and we can find time, maybe next week. Best, Kate

Also look to make a positive connection with someone who knows a lot of business owners - perhaps someone in a chamber of commerce, networking group and/or community service group. A good way is to be active in a local chamber of commerce that has ambassador roles to help new members get acclimated. Mentor people without a sales agenda. People will show appreciation and send referrals when the need comes up. Regarding the pitch and proposal...yes like everyone else says - be prepared with research and value prop. People don't have/make a lot of time for drop-ins. Make the time to set appointments and have 1:1 coffee, lunch, etc. Gage the needs and ask the business owner how else you might be able to help them in addition to focusing on your sale. Do a lot of active listening. Have confidence - good luck! Cheers, Kate

(more) Hi Dominique! It's been about 8 years since I left corporate to build my own consulting business. Given my strategic background and experience in entrepreneurship through my parents, I thought I knew everything it would take. But early on I still made some critical mistakes even though I knew better, having had a long and successful business career. I hired talent that was not the right fit and expanded too quickly which became exhausting. On the flip side, I didn't outsource enough the things I didn't like to do (bookkeeping) which made my day less fun and really frustrating because it took time from what I loved to do - work with clients. I learned patience and better scaling for growth. I pulled back on overhead and made sure I worked on cost containment. And most importantly, I learned not to undervalue myself or my services. It's easy to fall into that pattern when you start out. I stopped doing people "favors."  Not every project is a healthy project to take on. Hope that helps! Best, Kate

I believe many businesses make the mistake of forgetting about or addressing their complete digital marketing strategy when they approach social media. They get pressed for time to develop relevant content and try to just stay visible...sometimes they miss the mark on engaging their true target audience. A digital marketing plan with social media and a calendar help stay true to strategy and execution.

To answer your question regarding my specific 1:1 consulting business...yes, as most other consultants have responded, 99% of my business is network or referral based. There have been a handful of people who have found me through other channels. However, I am making the ever-deeper foray into online/digital to expand my services to reach 1:many so I can prepare for hopefully and earlier retirement! LOL. Hiring young talent raised and well-versed in an online world to support me makes it easier to keep up. Best, Kate

I learned a long time ago to let go of ego and learn from everyone I meet, ranging from children to seniors. You never know where wisdom and inspiration originates. Success can be measured in so many ways, so there's not a sure thing unless you set a goal and take action to meet or exceed it. One of the most precious keys in life and in business is to surround yourself with trusted talent, mentors, and advisors who help and motivate you.
