But, I would like to provide two strategies that would #1) solve the USPS’  financial problems immediately, #2) transform the customer service experience, and #3) significantly decrease their impact on our environment. First, acknowledge that most of the home-delivered mail is not mission critical to our every lives.  If half of our home-delivered mail was delayed by 1 day, I am suggesting that our personal lives would not be noticeably affected.  The strategy is to reduce home delivery from 6 days per week to 3 days per week.  The USPS would realize a 50% cost savings in the purchase and operation of the mail trucks.  We can even discuss reducing home-delivered mail to 2 days per week after a ten-year trial period. Second, acknowledge that the service hours of the USPS branches are limited and that it is difficult for busy people with post office business to make it to the USPS during service hours.  The strategy is to extend service hours from 7 AM to 9 PM.   This strategy would provide better customer service, shorten the queues and save layoffs of the mail carriers (redeployed as customer service reps). As a bonus strategy, examine the Amazon/USPS contract and determine whether the USPS loses money each day under this strategy.  If so, break the contract or renegotiate. I would love if these solutions could be a starting point in a conversation to permanently solve the USPS’ financial issues while saving the environment while providing better customer service.  Let’s talk.
