Depends on if you are going to meet and interview them in person 1st. There are way to many scam artists looking to take advantage of good people these days. If you are a decent judge of character and meet them in person an feel comfortable then save yourself the time and go with your gut. If not...

If not meeting and interviewing them personally i would 100% recomend a background check and even a drug screening. Hope this helps
