Keeping in mind that we are in an emergency oriented business. We cannot predict what our techs will find when they show up at a customer's house. So, we do the best as we can.

Keeping in mind that we are in an emergency oriented business. We cannot predict what our techs will find when they show up at a customer's house. So, we do the best as we can.
We set four hour windows; 8 to 12, 10 to 2 and 12 to 4. Our dispatcher keeps in contact with our techs and if they will be late for the next job he/she will call the customer and let them know. Some of our customers want to go about their business and ask us to call a half hour before arriving. This arrangement removes having a set time.
Communication is the key! Most customer's are understanding if informed ahead of time. Do not wait until you are past your scheduled time to call them. If a customer gets nasty and cancels, they are probably a customer that you do not need.

I haven't found any unique or magical opportunities. It comes down to dedication and good marketing. Ask your friendly competitors what they are doing, that is successful, and copy it.

Any internet related venues; Face Book, Google, etc. And it is cheap! However, you have to back it up with quality service from the first phone call through the tech leaving the job. That creates more good Google reviews and around it goes.

Yes, there is a labor crunch. In New Jersey different companies are trying to take away their competitors employee's. They offer their existing employees a bonus if they recruit someone else's employees.

Money is not always the answer. If you respect the employees, allow them to participate in the decision making and compliment show them how much they are appreciated it goes a long way. Sometimes it is worth one or two dollars an hour.
Market to your current customers. The chance of selling them is much greater than finding new customers and it is a lot cheaper.

Yes, I had this happen. There are people out there looking to take advantage of you. I have a policy of 100% satisfaction guarantee on our "work". This, however, doesn't include the price. My customers must sign that they agree on the price before we start. BTW, that is a law in NJ.
There is a larger issue here. If you don't have the paper work filled out properly,in the state of NJ, you have already committed consumer fraud. It has nothing to do with how good of a job you did. If it goes to court you are guilty no questions asked. What you are doing in court is seeing how much money you will pay and it is then trebled. So, if your paper work does not comply I strongly recommend giving the money back. It will be far less than what you will have to pay once the lawyers get done with you. Check with your attorney. Have the customer send an email indicating what he wants and send the check. Then forget about it. It isn't worth the stress.
I don't like to be intimated and that is what this customer is doing. In that case I wouldn't refund the money. You will have the ability to answer his complaint. I would remind him that he could be held responsible for "liable" if he misleads the public.

I visited local business that would be a source of leads. I found Realtors to be most helpful. It took on a life of its own from there.
