"After 15 years of being with one company, they decided to raise our rates without notice. Keep in mind, we had no changes to our driving records or any of our vehicles. I then reached out to James to see if he could help. He was the only company competitive and affordable. We have had him for three years and now he insures our entire family and several of our friends. I will continue to recommend him. "

No. Elevator speeches are good for getting your point across when you have a minute or two to introduce yourself or your agency to a captive audience. When you are in a social/business gathering, an elevator speech, to me, sounds like you're trying to hard. It's always better to let the conversation flow and only talk about yourself or your business as necessary and then talk about getting together outside the meeting to actually talk business. Nobody likes being 'sold' at a social gathering. Nobody.

I have a referral reward program for existing clients, which works wonders. As far as professional relationship referrals, it depends on the individual I'm working with. I'm a people person, so face to face is great. Those meetings are usually 10% business talk and the rest of the time is getting caught up on personal experiences and developing my personal relationship with my referral partner.
I find that learning about my partners and sharing about myself strengthens that relationship as well as uncovering things that you wouldn't necessarily know if just talking business. As an example, if I have a client that is an avid golfer, I would want to refer them to a realtor or lender who plays golf. Why? Because common interests are great ice breakers. Now, how would I know if a realtor or lender plays golf if I didn't take time to invest in a personal relationship with my business partners?
Most people look at referral partners, in general, in a very one dimensional way. What do I mean by that?? Well, you'd have to be one of my referral partners to find out......
I support local small business as often as possible. There are times, however, when it's not economically feasible to do so. Paying an extra 5 or 10 dollars for something to keep my money in the community is great, but 20 or 30 dollars is much more difficult to justify. The way that small...

I support local small business as often as possible. There are times, however, when it's not economically feasible to do so. Paying an extra 5 or 10 dollars for something to keep my money in the community is great, but 20 or 30 dollars is much more difficult to justify. The way that small businesses can make that an easy choice is with the service they offer. If shop/store owners get to know my name and keep great staff on hand, I don't mind paying more money. If, however, the owners and employees don't recognize that I could save money by going to Wallyworld.....I go to Wallyworld.
