Getting potential customers to understand the need for your product is always a challenge, especially for new business owners.
We have all started a business and thought we knew it all, yes even me. All of a sudden, we thought we were so good at sales that even selling running shoes to turtles would be easy. We believed that if we built it, they would just all come. Then we got a rude awakening when we found out they did not.
We discovered running a business is hard work. Sure, we have a website so that should get us business right? Well yes and no is the answer. Your potential customer must have a compelling reason to stay there plus all your other media to learn about what is in it for them. What the customer needs to see in any type of marketing is WHAT IS IN IT FOR ME. Your challenge until now has been finding an experienced wordsmith. The truth is I made all the above mistakes and it cost me a small fortune. Now I make your customer see (WIIFM) what is in it for me.

I forced myself to do it even though there were butterflies in my stomach every time I walked through a door. THEN A FRIEND TOLD ME SOME WILL BUY AND SOME WON'T, SO WHAT. I learned if I got one sale from 100 cold calls that is what it took. It was a whole lot easier to deal with 99 rejections with that thought in mind. Don't worry because eventually you'll get more sales as you become proficient and polished with your presentation. Here is my pitch. Hi I'm Dave and I just want to introduce myself. I write ads suitable for any media including regular emails, etc. Here's my card and please consider me in the future. Then I ask for their card and say may I send you an email from time to time to keep you up with the latest  advertising ideas? I ASKED PERMISSION. I did not ask for a sale and offered them something of value with no strings attached. That answers their unspoken question what is in it for me? Congratulations, you just got your foot in the door!

I used to sell used books on eBay every week always with tracking.  If it does nothing else it gets the name of the book out there. My next suggestion would be start knocking on the doors of sporting goods stores. Even a mom & pop store works. Do a book signing. Get  press releases in the local papesr and it benefits the store as well. When you start getting regular sales approach Amazon. If they take it you're in the money.

First and foremost attend every business networking event you can find and don't be a wallflower. Pick at least one day a week to personally visit every business you can find. Every business means don't rule them out just because you don't think they would be a good fit for you. You'll never know if you don't try. DO NOT give them the sales pitch.  Introduce yourself as another local business just wanting to learn about your neighbors. You'll discover that you will make friends and become well known in the community. Though it's playing the long game it is still the best game in town. Burn that shoe leather.

To the writing side we designed, wrote copy for and printed advertising flyers plus email ads for customers. In conjunction with our Grand opening we put a plush stuffed 5' tall Teddy Bear in the front window with a sign saying win me no purchase necessary. We also put a coffee pot on a table by the window with a sign that said come in and introduce your self and get a free cup of coffee. We ran the promotion for one month. We contacted the local paper and got a free press release. Out of all the people that came we retained about 20 as regular customers for many years. The promotion easily paid for itself a hundred times over. We had a lot of fun doing it.
