Marketing lists can be valuable, but they often need quite a bit of "clean up" in my experience since marketing professionals can change jobs frequently. Study up and ask questions about frequency of updates and information before purchasing. We also find that manually building lists through... Study up and ask questions about frequency of updates and information before purchasing. We also find that manually building lists through networking, associations and trade publications is successful and maintain our sales database by using ACT.

I haven't quite figured it out to know if it'll be valuable to us for marketing. But, I had the same initial reactions to LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter. Oh, and Google + (we don't use anymore).
