For what I do passing out flyers for students, and band schedules at gigs and talking to people right then and there. About a year to build up a big enough student body to call it viable. About 3 years to get a real income from performing, tho that has always been "in addition to" my main income which comes from teaching. The main thing I learned was to be as "many hatted" as possible. I taught jazz, classical, rock and roll, kids, adults, serious students some of whom went on to be pros, and hobbyists. I accompanied singers, played piano for auditions, worked with vocal coaches, played in rock bands, jazz bands, even got paid now and then for classical, musical theater, church services, you name it. Can't claim to have been successful at all of it, and dropped a couple of these activities if it looked like it would detract from my main "money makers" which were performing in rock bands, teaching and solo jazz piano.
