Only promise what you know you can deliver and more importantly what the client is prepared to accept. The realanswer to this question goes back to defining the client's needs, both perceived and real. The identification and solution to the client's dillema normally comes from within. The client... The realanswer to this question goes back to defining the client's needs, both perceived and real. The identification and solution to the client's dillema normally comes from within. The client may already have the answer but wants validation from an outside source and permission from that source, in this case, the consultant, to make the appropriate moves or changes that might be painful to him/her. In my experience, (100 companies or so), if there are employees involved they may have the answer but have been reluctant to put their jobs in jeopardy for fear of angering management. The answer then, goes back to carefully listening to all parties concerned and only then relate your findings based on your experience. The truth always wins out. If the consultant absolutely knows the answer and the outcome they should be straight forward enough to let the client know immediately. If the consultant finds them self in uncharted waters then they should lean to the side of caution and give the client the diagnosis and explain the options available to him/her.!
