For decades I have looked at my expenses on a weekly basis but now with my business in the toilet I look at them daily. I cut where I can cut without hurting my business. I am constantly looking for ways to grow revenue and keep my expenses low. The same thing I learned fifty years ago.
Sidebar: One of my suppliers waited to long to cut expenses and sadly now they are out of business. It doesn't do any good to just watch your expenses, you must act or react to the changing times.

I am great full that my employees understood that they would be better off collecting unemployment then the few hours they would get from my business.
On a personal note am truly thankful that all my family is healthy and not the victim of Covid.
I also know that the next couple of months will be very difficult. New Years Eve is the single busiest day of my business and it will be a complete bust this year.

I have always believed that my business has survived through tough times before because of relationships with my suppliers and my customers. But I have never had to really totally shut down my business before.
Worked backwards to some, I started with my suppliers to see how they were going to restart their business and what products would be available to me when I reopened. Almost everything will be available to me to sell because of my past relationships with them.
Next was my customers to see when they were going to reschedule their events. This was disappointing because most were not going to reschedule this year. But I kept my name out there.
The rest of the year would be playing by the seat of my pants. Hope I can guess right on all things other wise I might have to retire...Yuck
I am not one for making resolutions at New Year's, rather I set realistic goals that can be measured through out the year. I write the goals down and check my progress through out the year.

Marketing for all businesses is important and I am no different. I am old guy who has progressive ideas, social media is an area that I need to improve on. But there is a balance that I must maintain, look at the cost benefits of the social media. Small mom and pop's like me can't spent hours on twitter and still do normal business.
The end result is I try to find a balance in my marketing approach.
To all of you, I wish you a Merry Christmas and Holiday Season.

I have always sought advice on how to run my business, but now I lean on younger people for advice especially on social media. I realize I can't be on or in all forms of social media...so their advice is really important.
I guess I would say be more willing to adapt to the times would be my best advice.....don't get hung up on your business plan.
There are cold calls and then there are robo calls. If it is a genuine cold I listen for a few minutes and if I am interested I will listen to the pitch....rarely do I buy from a cold call.

Robo calls......I hang up right a way.... I have no time for this type of call. It must work for some......cause they call 3 to 10 times a day.

My advice is to change your avocation into a true business. Skip most of the social media and concentrate on developing only marketing that produces sales dollars. Then I would find an established company and work for them doing the things you love while developing your own business. There are plenty of companies looking for skilled and talented wood working people. One other thing, maybe your making the wrong items.....I know a talented wood worker that makes thousands of bird houses each year and vacations once a year in some exotic place....he also does fine cabinet work.....but the bird houses pay the bills.
I would first look at where your advertising dollars are being spent now. How do you measure and track your clients? Where do they come from? What is your target audience? Before spending any more money......see what is working and what is not.

A competitor of mine bragged three years ago she hire a person just for social media, twitter, facebook and things like that. It was a big ooops.....her clients like mine are not twitter savvy or spent a lot of time on facebook. The extra expenses associated with trying social media almost caused her business to go under
Now don't get me wrong there is definitely a place for social media in almost everyone's advertising budget. You just have to find one that gives you the most return for your buck
Think some are taking the question out of context....the emphasis should be the type of team you are playing on.......the winning team of course. It doesn't really matter if your the best, worse or something in between........Your on the winning team....championship team that is where success is...

It doesn't really matter if your the best, worse or something in between........Your on the winning team....championship team that is where success is measured... Ask any NFL player what they desire......."It is a super bowl world championship ring" My company has survived 28 years because we all work as a team...
