Weird, but true tales of freelance media producing without a net. One day, the Internet decided to create a business listing for my fiercely independent Audio/Video producer/engineer sole proprietorship.
The ad and fake website displayed my name, address & a twisted description of what it assumed my business was, including a Google street view shot of my home with my car in the driveway.
The twist was twofold: I didn’t do business with the public from the condo my family lived in pre-2010, but there it was featured with my landline phone number, which I don't list. (I only list my P.O. Box for mail).
Secondly, the business described had nothing to do with the services I offer. The ad claimed I was a Video Rental Store - you know, like Blockbusters. I even started receiving the Video Rental Store trade rags, unsolicited.
I attempted to delete the listing, and filed reports with Google to no avail. It persisted as things posted online often do.
I haven't had too many weird calls leading from that bad ad, but I still feel it was an amateurish hack by a wannabee ‘competitor.’
Ultimately, I have let it go. Hopefully, it will be buried in a google search under the prolific REAL postings I have inundated the web with since 2005.
I am out there and everywhere. Alaska is a small town and I am still at it with no real competition, since I often work for my colleagues.
In fact, if I wanted more business I would have to move Outside, which I chose not to do.
So why does the web believe one size fits all for business modeling or promotion?
Search me.
Unless you can ‘salt the mine’ it is a hoax. Make your content and put it out there, see who bites. It’s the new market research.

In Anchorage, its nearly impossible to attract a tv spot client unless you work for an established ad agency.
Low end ads are easier to sell cold. We are talking in the 500-1000 range, usually attractive to mom & pop shops about to go out of business.
Try walking a trade show floor and see...

Approach a potential client with a PSA script & offer to produce it for free.
Make an informative infomercial demo-ing your best and offering to create a web ad for free with slides or an iPhone with every 30 sec spot.

All in all I endeavor to act with the greater good in mind as opposed to what is good for me.
When I am on location, all frequencies are happy and there isn't any extra noise interfering then we are rolling.
