ASK Database Management came into being in early 2014. It is the brainchild of Art S. Kagel birthed as a vehicle to relaunch my independent consultancy. The overall focus of the consultancy is all things database. Taking advantage of 38 years of professional experience as software developer, systems analyst, database architect, database administrator, and business analyst I provide services to my clients that include Performance Evaluation and Tuning, Remote and Fill-In DBA Services, Active and Passive 24x7 Performance Monitoring Services, Training, Application Development, and Database and Data Warehouse Design Service among others. I have a further focus on IBM Informix and applications written to take advantage of that product.

While working for my former employer, I discovered a knack for understanding how database servers work and how to tune them and their environment for optimal performance. I became active in the online community of Database Administrators working with the database system that I am most familiar with mainly to be able to learn from others in the community and to get feedback on my own ideas. However, I soon began answering questions myself and developed a reputation. I soon realized that I have a marketable skill that I could offer to many organizations around the world and left that company to start consulting. While I do general development projects and occasionally am brought in on generic database administration and database architecture issues, I mostly work in that niche where my reputation is well known.

I started many years ago while still an employee of a major tech company to build a reputation in my industry and specifically as someone with expertise in a specific database software product and with database systems in general. When I left I first worked with other consulting groups in my field. Eventually went out on my own to start ASK Database Management Corp. I still have active relationships with both of those groups and we help each other out on specific projects from time to time.
I have also been active for all of that time in the international users group that supports the product with which I work most frequently and have sat on that Board of Directors for 10+ years. I also try to maintain good relations with the company that owns that software product and the company that now maintains it under contract to the owners. All of that hard work in brand and relationship building has resulted in my name being nearly universally known in the industry.
My target market includes any organization, business, or government agency that uses or has a need for a database management system or that has a system that needs to perform better.
I am a computer consultant specializing mostly in database design, database performance, and training for clients here in the US, South America, Europe, and Australia.
