Since 1969, Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg Rio Grande Valley has been in the forefront of youth development; with the mission to provide opportunity to all youth in a positive caring environment to enable them to become productive, responsible, influential citizens. Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg Rio Grande Valley has actively sought to enrich the lives of girls and boys whom other youth agencies have had difficulty in reaching. We are dedicated to ensuring that the youth that needs us the most have greater access to quality programs and services that will enhance their lives and shape their futures. The clubs are places where young people come to learn, do homework, develop social skills, and express themselves creatively.

Step 1:Identify.Identify board needs (Skills, knowledge, perspective, connections, etc., needed to implement the strategic plan.)What do we have?What is missing? Identify sources of board members with the needed characteristics. Utilize the board matrix to ensure board diversity. Step 2:Cultivate.Cultivate potential board members.Get them interested in your Club and keep them informed of your progress. Invite them to fundraising and program events (i.e. serve as program guest speaker, as a fine arts judge, as a Youth of the Year Judge etc...). Step 3:Recruit.Recruit prospects.Describe why a prospective member is wanted and needed.Describe expectations and responsibilities of board members, and don't minimize requirements.Invite questions and elicit their interest and preparedness to serve. This can also be done for a husband/wife team. A. Application- Statement of Interest for Potential Board Members - Each potential board member completes the document.This is used as the first step in getting to know the potential board member and to have an indication of their commitment. B.Interview - The Board Development Committee sets up an interview with the potential applicant to answers questions.The goal of the interview is to further determine if they might fit into the organization, so they can hit the ground running if and when they are appointed. C. Pre –Orientation - As a part of pre-orientation the potential board member is asked to attend a board meeting and tour the facility.This meeting allows the candidate time to observe our board dynamic Step 4:Orient.Orient new board members to the Club and the Movement — program, history, bylaws, pressing issues, finances, facilities, organization chart — and to the board — recent minutes, committees, board member responsibilities, lists of board members and key staff members. Step 5:Activate.Activate all board members.Discover their interests and availability.Involve them in committees or task forces.Assign them a board "buddy."Solicit feedback.Hold everyone accountable.Express appreciation for work well done. Step 6:Educate.Educate the board.Provide information concerning your mission area.Promote exploration of issues facing the Club.Don't hide difficulties.Celebrate accomplishments. Introduce Club kid moment at your board meetings, use board members as Youth of the Year Judges, encourage board members to volunteer at program events. Step 7:Rotate.Rotate board members.
