About 20% of my clients have filed their tax returns already, most will be waiting until July 15 deadline which will give them extra time to pay their IRA contributions as well and others have asked to help me file an extension which will give them until October 15 to file and pay

I would of started out with some sort of work agreement in writing between you and the other individual. Since he cannot complete the work of doing the tax return I would pay him a fair hourly or by the piece wage and cancel the verbal agreement with you. Wherever he entered the info I would...

Wherever he entered the info I would change the password so he cannot access the info any longer. Pay him for what he did do, but I would verify that was he did do was correct. If it is not you need to pay him for what he did correctly. Not what he did wrong.

I don’t have employees I only use sub-contractors and there’s no limitation on questions you could ask as there are with employees.

I agree with most of the answers. Usually it costs 2-3 times as much to fix the problems. Not including interest or penalties. I am a Certifed Pro Advisor for QuickBooks and have been doing Tax Preparation and Consulting for over 30 years. Please get hold of me with any questions.
