I run PrairieVista Tax Services Inc and the focus of my business is the "Services" part of the name. I do tax preparation well (like other similar businesses) but a vital part of what I do is educate my clientele on what they can do to improve their situation. I find that most tax preparers do not help the client in this way. I am also transitioning some of my clients to a more close relationship in their bookkeeping needs. The ideal client for me is one who is intentionally trying to learn more about their own finances and ask questions on how to improve themselves and, their financial situation. I do not offer investment advice or sell stocks, etc. but give practical advice on what they can do to move themselves ahead.

I admit a prime reason to network, even for me, is to build more client base. I do like to meet with others in the same line of work to share ideas or to help each other work through issues. Sometimes I may have the answer to a question you have or vice versa. Then we take ourselves to the rest of the network and can use our expertise to help others' clients as they, in turn, are able to help ours.

My type of business usually collects at the time of the service so I would not normally have accounts receivable. Having said that, I think one of the reasons business might hold on to the debt for a year before placing the account in debt recovery or something like that is to give the client a chance to save their dignity by clearing up the debt. Opportunity to "save face" is lost in our culture and can give you a loyal customer if used properly. There are, of course, those who would take advantage of this so we need to deal with those appropriately, too.
I have not been on the interviewer side too much but the most effective I have seen was when the recruiter presented a list of the company's core values and asked that the candidate describe what each of these values meant to them. It was interesting because one of the core values was to have...

I have not been on the interviewer side too much but the most effective I have seen was when the recruiter presented a list of the company's core values and asked that the candidate describe what each of these values meant to them. It was interesting because one of the core values was to have fun. You get to know where they are coming from.
I also like to ask how their career journey has prepared them for the role they believe they will have with the company. That gets their history even if they have a shorter experiential time line.
We see a naturopath (sp?) for solutions to health issues. I also agree wholeheartedly with John F. Clark's answer. Jesus is a great choice.

I had a client who had phoned to make a first appointment. He had asked if I could do his and his wife's returns for under $100 (it was a while ago). No problem. I got him $1,000 return. He was shocked as he had never received more than $100 since he retired. He gave me his old returns and I...

I had a client who had phoned to make a first appointment. He had asked if I could do his and his wife's returns for under $100 (it was a while ago). No problem. I got him $1,000 return. He was shocked as he had never received more than $100 since he retired. He gave me his old returns and I did ten years of adjustments and netted him around $1,000 per year for each of them. I had a customer for life!

My prices are competitive but fairly set but I have the freedom to give discounts based on the client's situation. Generally, when I explain this and offer them a discount (if applicable), they are very happy. I have had people "tire-kicking" and wanting me to do both them and their spouses tax returns for much less than I charge for a single return because "the guy down the street from my place gives me that price!" Then I encourage them to go to that guy down the street. Usually they then tell me that he/she does not do a very good job. Then we can start talking for real on rates!
