I also like to ask how their career journey has prepared them for the role they believe they will have with the company.  That gets their history even if they have a shorter experiential time line.

He had asked if I could do his and his wife's returns for under $100 (it was a while ago). No problem. I got him $1,000 return. He was shocked as he had never received more than $100 since he retired. He gave me his old returns and I did ten years of adjustments and netted him around $1,000 per year for each of them. I had a customer for life!

Generally, when I explain this and offer them a discount (if applicable), they are very happy. I have had people "tire-kicking" and wanting me to do both them and their spouses tax returns for much less than I charge for a single return because "the guy down the street from my place gives me that price!" Then I encourage them to go to that guy down the street. Usually they then tell me that he/she does not do a very good job. Then we can start talking for real on rates!
