Retired engineer living in Sacramento area and science fiction author. The Guild is a critique and discussion group, currently not meeting of course, but making plans for the future, including another conference in 2021.

I have an office with my computers and reference books. The computer plays music, essentially white noise since I don't even hear it when a favorite song comes on, and is used to develop and run the software that I use to keep track of characters, timelines, etc. (more) I have an office with my computers and reference books. All my networking is with other writers, and we are 100% remote currently. We will return to in-person meetings as soon as we consider it to be safe. I can start wandering whether I’m in, out, in the shower, or in bed not yet asleep. That’s how I get a lot of my ideas. (more) I can start wandering whether I’m in, out, in the shower, or in bed not yet asleep. That’s how I get a lot of my ideas.

I have used Amazon ads, giveaways on Amazon and Goodreads, and posts on reader websites like Electric Bookshelf, Goodreads, and diabolicShrimp. Probably the most successful was the first Amazon giveaway because it got 695 copies of my first book out there and stimulated sales on all three of my trilogy. I've had a few signings with some success, but none of them were in big bookstores. I hope this helps a little. Good luck.

For my third book, publication was delayed by a problem with my cover designer, and a minor character started bugging me with the idea that, since I wasn't doing anything, I should give her a bigger part. I did, and that character played a significant role in my fourth novel also.

I don't copy people, but I do copy traits sometimes. I've used my wife's smile several times. (more) I don't copy people, but I do copy traits sometimes. I've used my wife's smile several times.

We always borrow something from our real lives, I think, even if we're writing science fiction or fantasy. My novels often mention the "Yellowstone Event" in 2210. Although it has always been treated as something in the past that reverberates to the time of my novels, I may someday tell the story of that event and the changes it wreaks in my future universe. The experience of this crisis could help me write about the societal impact of that future event.
