He is a consummate storyteller who values both economy and prosaic texture. In his book "The Garbage Brothers", he offers us the essences of his characters. They have depth, heart and dignity, and they come alive for us with authentic dialog. Paul works the story with a wry humor that softens the harder edges of life with grace and the commonality of being human. I loved reading this book, and I’m sure when I come around to it again it will inform my life beautifully. It’s that kind of book."

(more) I use QuickBooks online (a move from QuickBooks desktop), and find it the best solution for my needs.  It's very hard for me to make the time and set priority for bookkeeping. It does often feel like I'm taking away from production, which means I'm not making money in those moments.  I'm a sole prop and creative, and wear lots of hats (I'm sure I'm not alone in that). It helps to remind myself that the invisible work of good bookkeeping keeps my business healthy and robust, which is part of making money. Using QB online version, I can get invoices out quickly and get paid much more quickly which is critical to operations cash flow. I use automated procedures where I can (bank transaction downloads, recurring invoices for some accounts, for example).  I work to keep everything as simple and easy as possible, for both me and my clients. Echoing other replies to this question, it's critical to have solid routine bookkeeping!  Even if we're just counting beans, we've got to know how many of which kinds of beans we have, how many we've sold, how many we might sell tomorrow so how many we may need to stock up on or plan services for.  And it's pure gold magic to have numbers that, over time, paint a picture of what's going on.  You can't see much from a single transaction. Long ago I invested in accounting services to get QuickBooks set up correctly.  I've used bookkeeping services in the past, but it works best for me now to do it myself. So I work on being very Zen about it (chop wood, carry water).
