A firm hand shake and an up close face-to-face discussion can actually provide a better image and can give you a physical feeling about the person you are trying to connect with. If you have never done a live network, then it would be hard to make a true analysis of the effect. Virtual networking lacks the warmth of true contact. Groups settings can be very stimulating when multiple people are able to gather in small groups and carry on conversations all at the same time, you can physically mingle and listen and contribute.
If you are always winning you lose the opportunity to learn how to handle the loses. Sometimes it is the team spirit that makes the loses palatable.
