Do I have to wait until open enrollment to start with a new insurance provider?

My husband just quit his job and we've been on his insurance. Do I have to wait until Open Enrollment to start with a new provider? And if I do, what will we do to cover our family in the meantime?

Good Question ... Unfortunately Obamacare has placed limitations on the options available to you ..You could approach your Husbands Group Provider and a “ COBRA “ option ..You could enroll in a “ Short Term “ Plan for up to One Year in most states ..You could tigger a “ Special Enrollment Period “ and enroll in an ACA plan ...None of these options is the best ..They ALL depend upon your family’s needs and desires ..I hope this is helpful ..Please feel free to ask additional questions as you explore your options ..God Bless
Absolutely not! In fact you have several options to chose from.  Most people coming off a group plan get sticker shock when they see the marketplace prices.  However, depending on your financial situation you may qualify for a premium tax credit. ( you may still have large deductibles) You typically have 60 days from the time you lost your coverage to get an ACA plan.  If you don’t like the ACA or COBRA plan options, you may qualify for an underwritten private plan based off your good health.  An underwritten plan puts you in a group of healthy people which brings your premium/deductibles way down below an ACA plan.  If you need any assistance regarding what options are available, please message me.  Best of Luck!
If you have health insurance available to you with your provider, you should be able to get you and your family added to that health plan now.  The fact that your husband lost his job is what they call a "Qualifying Event" which means you can get coverage through your employer's health care without waiting for open enrollment time.
If your husband quit his job that is a qualifying event.  You can secure new major medical insurance in the marketplace or if the prior employer should offer what is called State Continuation (if less than 20 employees) or Cobra (if more than 20 employees). This allows you to continue coverage while seeking a new job which offers benefits.
Hi , you don’t have to wait until open enrollment if you lose your health insurance. With my company even if you have insurance you can take my plan, we aren’t part of the ACA . I would be happy to give you a quick quote . My plans cover illness, accidents, wellness, critical illness, dental, vision and more. In most cases we are saving people money on premiums and increasing benefits.
Sandra is correct in regards to qualifying for the "Special Enrollment" period.  In addition, if you are moving due to a change of employment, then you might also qualify for a "Special Enrollment" period.
No, you do not have to wait until OE. You would qualify for an SEP (Special Enrollment Period). Once you lose qualifying coverage, an SEP is generated. Now, here is the caveat to that SEP: you must find another qualifying plan within 60 days of losing, in this case, the group insurance coverage.

So, from the date that group coverage was lost, you have 60 days. After 60 days, the only plans available would be STM plans (Short Term Medical).

Hope this helps to answer your question.

Don't wait for ACA Open Enrollment. It Sounds like you will Qualify for a Special Election Period to enroll in the current ACA Plans. ( within 60 Days from loss of initial coverage ). You can also look at a Temporary Insurance Plans. You will need to really look at the November Open Enrollment Plans. There will be plan changes. Also there will / may be new  Insurance carriers in the Knoxville Region. Take a look at Bright Health.

There are affordable options available for you and your family before open enrollment. If you would like help in analyzing your family's needs and options available, please message me.
No, you do not have to wait until open enrollment to find a plan. This was the same scenario as I went through. My health insurance was through my husband's job and he quit. I would suggest speaking with an health insurance broker to get a good visual of all your options that are available to you. Have a blessed day!
