Do you use subcontract labor? If so, is outsourcing via Odesk a legitimate option?

Hi Arlee. I've used Upwork.com successfully. Be sure to find people who have a good rating, don't go for the lowest price. Start with a small project and gradually increase the tasks you provide them. It's helpful to find a handful of trusted people that you can call on when you need them. I also think it's beneficial to find people who are fulltime freelancers, not evening/weekend workers so that they are more flexible and available.

We have not used outsourced labor in the past as our work involves some data security issues that make using non employee workers expensive.

I outsource but I personally check in on their work (site visits, calls to client to check in etc.) to keep a level of trust and integrity with my client.

We never out source. We ate responsible for the outcomes so we will do the work ourselves. Period.

As i do business in many jurisdictions around north america [not just edmonton where am located] the location of a freelancer in the area of the project is often better as they know the particular local conditions of the builds/renos. most often i locate these freelance designers via personal contacts and referrals from local or regional contractors. i also do designs myself so know enough to review their work. going blind with a freelancer can be risky if you do not have expertise in the field.

The easy answer is to judge it the same way you would judge it for your employees. To set standards I would see the work done by a respected contractor, inside and/or outside your market area.
