Have you come across a CPA offering part-time CFO/Controller services, and what does it mean to you?

That is my business model. It is a very good one. Many small businesses like the idea of "One Stop Shop" when it comes to their financial needs. CPEs help keep the knowledge current. More CPEs the better. Knowledge is KING!

It's the wave of the future. Lawyers have been doing that for years. Part-time town judges, part-time mediators, part-time anything a person has the skills to do. As long as the CPA's contract does not prohibit them from practicing upon departure (non-competes or non-solicitations, restrictive covenants which should always be reviewed by an employment lawyer before signing an employment agreement outlining the term, services, compensation, etc...) should not be a problem. Of course, the CPA, like a lawyer has to be aware of potential conflicts of interest (i.e. if the CPA appears before the IRS for example for a client who happens to work for the company where the CPA is the Controller.

A ‘part-time’ Controller or CFO can perform nearly all of the same services as a full time Contoller or CFO. However, hiring a part-time Controller provides an entity the flexibility to lower costs by only assigning tasks to the Controller that meet their skills and compensation levels. Typically, hiring a Controller as a contractor can reduce overall costs. We perform part-time CFO and Controller services at FlexControllers.
