I had my first episode of lower back pain at 19. Been going to a chiropractor ever since!
Yoga has worked best for me. After consistent practice, I noticed my alignment and posture improved dramatically, which naturally decreased strain. In addition, my core and back strength increased which allowed more support along my spine and more lengthening. I found when I visited my doctor that I had actually gained a half-inch of height that I had lost!
Being an acupuncturist I would recommend acupuncture AND Chinese medicine. There are several causes of back pain; Back pain due to trauma or injury, back pain due to degeneration of the spine , back pain due muscle and tendon deficiency or tightness, back pain due to internal organ problems such as the kidney etc. etc. Acupuncture, Osteopathy, and chiropractic adjustments can relieve pain but if it is due to internal causes, disc degeneration, muscle and tendon weakness then Chinese medicine is called for as the root of the problem must be addressed.
The big question here is what is the cause of the back pain. To be assessed by examination and imaging when needed. Some cases are initially misdiagnosed. Was their an incident, fall, sports, auto accident. Are the Objective ( physical) findings consistent, with the patients subjective complaints? Many complaints are strain sprains, chiropractic subluxations or segmental motion restrictions, due to some incident. Which may be effected by deconditioning, family history, prior injuries, work or other activities. MANY OF THESE CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED BY A CHIROPRACTOR. I have seen many missed diagnosed, kidney stones, gallbladder, fractures, disc injuries and radicular injuries, or peripheral nerve injuries, all present as back pain. Unfortunately alot of imaging is not productive (except in cases of major trauma, or exam findings). rarely see a kidney stone on an X-ray, Ultrasound yes. New disc injury rarely. Cancer and fracture yes. Chiropractors can assess conditions and recommend the correct treatment for you.
