The Number Every Business Owner Should Know — But Doesn't Yet
You know your cash balance. Probably down to the dollar. You check it regularly, you make decisions based on it, and if it drops below a certain point, alarm bells go off.
Now — what's your network worth?
Not vaguely. Not "I have some good contacts." The actual dollar value of the relationships sitting inside your Alignable network right now, based on who's in it, how strong those connections are, and how many potential customers are reachable through them.
Most owners have never seen that number. Next week, right here you will.
Starting next week, Alignable is rolling out something we've been building toward for a while: your Network Value — a real calculation, unique to you, that translates your relationships into estimated business potential. Not a vanity metric. Not a follower count. A number grounded in the actual economics of your business: what a customer is worth to you, how referrals convert, and how many of the right people are reachable through the connections you already have.
Think about what that means for a second. Every business owner obsesses over their cash balance because it's a concrete, honest signal of where they stand. Your network is worth multiples of whatever's in your bank account — it's the engine that fills it — but until now it's been invisible. No number, no dashboard, no way to know if it's growing or shrinking.
That changes next week.
When you see your Network Value Score for the first time, a few things are going to happen. You're going to understand, in concrete terms, why some weeks feel flush with leads and others feel like you're starting from zero. You're going to see exactly which connections are doing the most work for you — and which relationships have gone cold that probably shouldn't have. And you're going to have something you've never had before: a reason to invest in your network the same way you invest in anything else that shows up on a balance sheet.
The number is going to surprise you. For most members, it's much larger than expected — because most of us dramatically underestimate how much potential sits just one or two relationships away. For some, it's going to be a wake-up call: a network that looks healthy on the surface is actually thinner than you thought, with a handful of relationships carrying almost all the weight.
Either way, knowing is better than not knowing. Always.
This Week's Play
Before your Network Value Score drops next week, do one thing: make sure Alignable knows who you're actually trying to reach.
Go into your profile and confirm that your ideal customer description is specific — not "small businesses" or "homeowners," but the actual type of person or business you want more of. The more precise your profile, the more accurately your Network Value Score will reflect the real opportunity in your network.
One update. Five minutes. You'll want the number to be right when you see it for the first time.

Excellent article Eric. Reminds me of my many years in BNI. We focus on "Specific is Terrific." My Alignable #374,800 Referral Opportunities.
This reframe hits different for me — the cash balance analogy is exactly right.
We obsess over liquidity because it's visible. But most of the real business potential sitting in a network stays invisible because there's no number attached to it. No number means no decisions, no investment, no intentional growth.
What I find most interesting about this isn't the score itself — it's what happens after you see it. That's when you stop managing relationships reactively (following up when you need something) and start treating your network like the asset it actually is. Consistent deposits. Strategic attention. Real ROI thinking.
The "handful of relationships carrying almost all the weight" part is the one I'd pay closest attention to when this drops. Concentration risk in a network is just as dangerous as it is in a revenue model — and most owners don't know they have it until something breaks.
Looking forward to seeing the methodology behind the calculation.
Wow, I can’t wait for this, genius!
Great advice, Eric, thank you.
Hello Eric, I truly appreciate your attention to detail and guiding our individual businesses. My storytelling on Tours at the museum is not endorsed by any media marketing, except two shows that I produced for the museum, which were advertised. That's why I place snippets of my storytelling tours on META, INSTAGRAM platforms, along with self-made flyers to advertise myself doing Guided Tours and encourage my patrons to endorse me on their social media platforms. This is why I was interested in ALIGNABLE! For many years, I have been a member of this organization. I have learned and I am still learning. However, the cost of $500 to promote myself is still being saved up by me. Eric, what suggestions can you give me?
I am looking forward to the launch and learning my Network score.
Most business owners I speak with will track cash daily, but have no idea what their network is actually worth. That’s the real asset driving future revenue. Thanks Eric!
Thanks Eric! Always appreciate the work you and the team are developing behind the scenes!
Interesting! This is going to be enlightening.
Well informed article Eric, I'm looking forward to more details on this subject.
