What are your big writing dreams?

As a writer, what are your big dreams? A place on the bestseller list? A movie adaptation? Simply to be remembered through your work?

Excellent question. I'd like a story to make it to the screen. I had a near-miss once; it didn't dim my desire. Movies, as someone in an ad on Turner Classics says, are the perfect art form--words, music, framed scenes like paintings, acting, dance. Dependent on collaboration among the arts and artists. But aside from that, movies offer a huge, timeless, worldwide audience. "If you don't talk happy and you never have a dream, than you'll never have a dream come true." Oscar Hammerstein, II. Pass the popcorn!

I write nonfiction, mostly about the natural world, and mostly for young readers.  I guess my dream these days would be to have teachers and parents understand the importance of science education and provide engaging and accurate reading materials like what I and my fellow authors write to the younger generation.  If they fall in love with the natural world, they will want to help it survive.

Of course it would be lovely to win one of the big awards or have one of my books made into a movie, but my biggest writing dream is simply to write stories that children enjoy, that entertain and inspire, that help them understand their place in the world, and that let them know that whatever their experiences - good or bad - they're not alone.

Already achieved them--at least as a writer. Six books by major publishers, seveal best-sellers published in Itilian, Chinise, Farsi, Spanish; three of which have received Nautlas Awards. I am also honored and pleased to be a mentor for those working at developing their own authentic voice and getting their work out to the world.

Do I answer this honestly, or realistically? To be honest, of course I'd like a place on the bestseller list, but realistically, I don't expect that. I'll be happy to know that people read and enjoyed my book. Anything else is frosting!

First, I would like to be able to effectively promote my book  Courage to Care - You can help others who are suffering.    I simply want to help others in churches or individuals who simply want to help a relative or friend who is hurting or has a time of discouragement for various reasons.

Beyond that I am writing some fictional stories that will turn into a novella that takes place in the late pioneer era, based on my grandparents' experience coming to Minnesota in 1903.  Writing these mostly for our own grandchildren, but I am told there is a market for this kind of story telling.

I initially set out to pen a few books that my family could enjoy.  So, I guess it was to be remembered.  Now well into my third book, my aspirations are truly centered on turning this love into a real vocation.  My dream is to establish long-term relations with an agent and publisher that desire to grow with me.  Let them do their thing and let me write.

I want to continue writing page-turning, character-driven novels. If I'm fortunate to have one of my books optioned as a movie, of course, I'll be extremely happy. However, to inspire a reader, with a dream of writing their own story, is what happened to me---the more I read someone else's books. I want to be remembered as a writer who dared and lived through my words.

During the past 15 or 20 years, I have had 7 producers approach me with the idea of turning one of my books into either a feature film, a television film, or a TV mini-series. Something has happened to kill the idea every time -- usually not being to raise the money for the project, but sometimes a producer just deciding to change his or her mind. I keep hoping that some producer will read one of my books and and will have the money and the resources to use one of my books as the basis for a film or a TV series.

Obviously, my first big dream was to write a novel and get published. That happened, then I wrote another novel and got that one published as well. I'm currently working on a sequel to the first novel. I guess in terms of "new" big dreams is for my work to be appreciated. Until you've written a book and gone through the tedious process of editing, publishing, printing, etc., you can't realize how hard it really is. I wish more people would take the time to write reviews. It means so much but people don't seem to get that for some reason. Even if the book wasn't your favorite, write an honest review. Trust me, I can take it, and I really want to know what you think. A film adaptation would be beyond thrilling!
