What tips do you have for business owners who are new to digital marketing?

So many businesses had to take their marketing online, but many aren't familiar with the methods or best practices. What advice can you share for those who feel overwhelmed or don't know where to start?

With most things, it is difficult to achieve mastery without a constant commitment to learning new things and a steady application practicing that learning.  That's why an expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less.  When it comes to digital marketing, pick an area or two to really know, and then partner with or rely upon professionals for everything else.  Always ask good questions.  Always ask your service provider to be able to demonstrate a return on investment or a progression in agreed upon metrics.  But realistically speaking, in the long run, professionals work with professionals.

For starters, you need to understand the client journey, then you must be able to independently quantify the success of each and every form of marketing you are running. As we are part of the USA Today Network and the digital arm for Gannett media, our service and tools are second to none and our proprietary technology sets us apart. Simply put, we not only garner the best possible returns but we prove our results every day. I could talk about this for a long time, as I often help businesses starting out with digital marketing. The number one thing is you know more than you think. The more you know about your customers and your customer journey (initial contact through purchase and post-purchase), the better positioned you are for digital marketing. Digital marketing is a reflection of your offline services so customers know they've come to the right place when they find you online. It's true that since the pandemic, eCommerce is no longer optional. The good news is, none of us can be in business without taking payments and having customers. That means you have a contact list (names, emails, phone), and a way to get money in the bank. Those are the critical places to start and in the beginning you create an ecosystem around that. Over time, your online customer experiences needs to reflect your offline experience. It takes time. You can do it. I've created a list to help businesses get started with digital marketing (no email address required, although I'd sure appreciate it if you subscribed).

Know who you customer segments are and represent them in a customer avatar worksheet. Many businesses only think of their customer, clients or patients as an undifferentiated mass. You may only have one segment, but likely you have multiple. Do they require their own communication channels, do they need a different value proposition, does this group require a different customer relationship than others? Then it's a separate customer segment and needs to be marketed to differently.

I would highly recommend you fill out a customer avatar worksheet for each of your customer segments. This will give your marketing focus, you'll know how to target your customers, what to talk to them about, what platforms to market to them on, and what pain points to address. Doing this alone can save you from many missteps.

First: Always consider the budget you think you are comfortable with to maintain a constant monthly marketing strategy.

Second: What online marketing strategy will provide the most exposure, branding and potential sales conversions for the buck.

Third: Typical additional online digital marketing campaigns:

  1. "SEO" Search Engine Optimization (best cost effective sollution)
  2. FaceBook Campaign Ads & Posts
  3. Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, YouTube Campaign Ads

In Conclusion: I suggest $99 monthly SEO for any business type and size that is looking for a smart fast way to get their company name, products, services and or information on the internest best search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo.  This is probably the best way to brand your business and t potetnially obtain the greatest percentage of sales conversions for one of the most affordabe organic marketing programs that exist for small, medium and large size companies to include ecommerce , woocommerce, shopping cart, information, service websites.

Digital Marketing - or ANY marketing for that matter is not a "magic bullet" that magically delivers instant success and measurable results. An effective digital marketing plan requires strategy, persistence, creativity, and consistency to work for your business.   At MarcoIslandLiving.com we share your digital marketing efforts with our network to expand your reach and help you achieve measurable results and new customers.  Creatively reminding people about what you do, and how it make their life better will help you get results with Digital Marketing.

New to digital marketing? Before starting out here are a few things to consider:

- Know your market. What does their demographic look like? Are they using social media? And if so, where are they found?

- Understand the difference between digital marketing and advertising (SEO, GoogleMyBusiness and Google Maps, Directories, Paid Search) and social media marketing and advertising (all the social media sites and the advertising that can be done on them). Which are your customers or clients using?

- Is your website up to par and will it grab a viewer's attention within 6 seconds. Remember that everything you do will lead back to your website so make sure it's the centerpiece of your strategy and that user experience is key. They need to be able to navigate easily and quickly and calls to action are clear and compelling. Anyone can create a pretty website, it's a little more challenging to create one that converts.

- Think about your story - one that answers the question that every customer or client asks: "What's in it for me?". Remember that it's all about the client - they don't care who you are or what you have, so everything has to be written with that in mind. And carry the same story through across all marketing and advertising channels.

 - Create a 6 month marketing plan with clear objectives and goals.

- Set up Google Analytics for your website and use Google tag lines on all advertising so that you can analyze and see what's working and what is not.

- The form of advertising that gives the best ROI is still email - so make sure that you're building your email database as you go along  (Do NOT purchase a database).

- All of this is time consuming, especially if you don't know what you're doing. My best recommendation is to hire a reputable digital marketing company to at least give you recommendation as to what will be best for your company, so that you don't waste money on something that is not right for you.

Good luck!
