A great question. In my business I help lift clients over to VoIP (or UCaaS) from conventional PBX and actually from other less effective VoIP systems. Between the two, the client's savings on communications can be between 20-75% depending on their carrier. With Cisco's recent $1.6B acquisition of Broadsoft it has actually put a nail in the coffin of traditional phone systems.
With today's UCaaS you have unbelievable flexibility, communications, and reliability at a fraction of the cost of conventional phone systems. They offer the ability for everything from video conferencing which can directly mitigate travel cost for Face2face interactions and the ability to bring your office with you globally as you travel.
There is an added cost to some degree if you do not currently have a network capable of supporting Power Over Ethernet (POE). However, the ROI for this change is usually fairly quick, and if you're planning to for your future for your business it is a wise investment. There is nothing in technology that is future proof. But this transition should help your business stay current for the foreseeable future. Given at least 5-10 years.
I am not advocating that you use me as I am mostly operating in the Chicagoland area. You should be able to find a solid consultant in your local geography, that can help you calculate the cost structure, savings, and added business efficiencies to create change. It will happen to your business, that is inevitable. It is just a matter of when it will happen.
Larry, VOIP is definately the way to go, but, there are a lot of types of VOIP. At CQ Simple, as a manufacturer, we offer the Nimbus PBX, premise based and with a lifetime warranty. It is very cost effective and gives you a large feature set.
We also offer Total Care which prices the system like a hosted product , per seat, but with our premise based system, phones, all call record and lots of features plus sip trunk, Virus Protection, Web Protection, IT Help desk and Patch management. Being in the Financial segment, you need the Cyber security offerings and it doesn't have to be expensive.
We ever offer a Pen test for free to see the risk assessment for your business.
I started using VOIP over 10 yrs ago and think its the greatest thing since sliced bread. I use Ooma.com and pay about $5 mth. I find it irritating that companies charge you one price for residential and an outrageous one if you're a business regardless of the size. So I switched to VOIP. It works great. I can't imagine why anyone would ever want a landline again. The only drawback is if your internet goes down and I have calls forwarded to my cell if it did. The amount of times my internet went down I can count on two fingers.
If your business is in a remote area with sketchy internet service....then I wouldn't recommend it. And I'd also recommend you increase your bandwidth to 50+ mps. Basic internet speed may not be suffice. I increased mine to 75mps
Having been in telephony since Analog phones and watched the transition to Digital phones (central offices) to now Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), it is amazing what features are now available on your phone to help you work more efficiently and productively. The hosted VoIP systems allow for an expense item on your P&L instead of a capital expense upfront for a PBX system. Cisco has purchased the BroadCloud software platform to keep its edge in the telecom industry. As a telecom broker/consultant, we have represent all the major carriers of VoIP systems. We have identified all the features, reliability and price points of these carriers. We design your phone system for you based on how you work and how your want to work more efficiently. By utilizing the right features for a business, we have watched many of our customers grow. Plain old telephone service is going by the wayside, to stay current and to keep getting constant updates of features, hosted VoIP is the way to go.
Larry, I have used a product called Voiply for the past 5 months. It is very economical $17/month and it includes the phone. There was a short period where I could have been missing calls because of a modem setting called Alp or something like that. It was corrected and no issues. I office in Minnesota and my home office is in Florida and they are just like making normal calls.
Larry, I am in the Telephony business for over 40 years. Most of today's calls are processed over VoIP. If you want give me a call and i can answer any questions and provide with clear concise information. xxx xxx xxxx.

it's no longer the future; it's the present
Even regular phone service is delivered at least partially over VoIP these days
One of the great features of straight VoIP is that you can unplug your phone, move across the country, plug it in, and no one will be any the wiser
