Internally, you can control how you process your email (internally and never leave the network ). Externally, you have to communicate with the receiver, so all emails are open, to a degree. We only send over SSL. All attachments are encrypted and password protected. Drives are encrypted, so local copies of emails are encrypted.

suggested MailProtector is much simpler to use and is easy to set rules to prevent info that should be protected from slipping through the cracks. It also allows large file transfers, automatic notification of messages being opened, prevents the forwarding of the message without your approval..lots more features.

Well, my choice is ProtonMail. It is a Swiss-based encrypted email service. There is a limited free tier, but since this was a "crowd-funded" project several years ago, I recommend getting a paid level of service. It is not expensive. BTW, ProtonMail survived a horrendous DDOS attack a while back, but with the help of their ISPs and other network experts, they were able to break off the attack and implement a more robust service. ProtonMail is low-key about their work. You won't receive spam or promotional messages.

I've been using proton mail for about a year now and it is an excellent solution.
It works well with others that don't have a proton mail account by sending them a link to view their message.
