In todays information world there is no reason to not have a cloud based disaster recovery plan. We use a product for our customers that allows us create image based backups (chain of files that make up a disk) with the backups happening as quickly as 15 minutes. These backups can then be converted to a virtual server in the event of a disaster and used as replacement for the physical server (or desktop). The same images are then sent offsite (replicated), in a REAL physical location disaster (hurricane, fire, tornado, etc) a virtual server is then "spun up" at the offsite server, using vpn connections the company can be operational again without having a physical facility. This minimizes down time and ensures business continuity. Of course the system allows for simple file recovery of deleted files and since it the images are created incrementally various points in time can be recovered. THIS IS THE ONLY REAL WAY TO RECOVER FROM A CRYPTO INFECTION, even paying the RANSOM you are not guaranteed to get your data back.

Quote from Solyent Green "its the people". While said in jest employees present the biggest risk to a companies information security. More play on words from the song "just one KISS from you" the nefarious people are singing it as "just one CLICK from you". But this is only one of the hurdles, its hard to pick the biggest! As others have mentioned, right sizing the products and services, getting employee buy in on changes are right up there on the hurdles list.

General business tip 2: Realize you are going to have to sell. Whether it's product or services when you startup you have to be the sales person, so be prepared. If you have not sold before begin your training now.
General business tip 3: People like to do business with people they know, like and trust. The latter are the most important in the beginning. Not everyone is going to like you, it's business so don't take it personal.
General business tip 4: Not all customers are good customers. Evaluate your profit, relationship, pain level with customers and realize sometimes you have to fire one and move on.
IT Systems tip 1: Use cloud resources as a startup, Office365 and GSuite will do most of what is need and most accounting software is available online.
It Systems tip 2: Don't buy more than you need, its easier to "get by" in the beginning than spend $'s on product your not using.
It Systems tip 3: (general business tip as well) Be careful when signing up for trial software using your credit card. Its easy to forget to cancel and they bill monthly, these add up. Consider canceling your debit/credit card and getting a new one issued at the beginning of the year, the vendors who are billing you that minimal amount will let you know asap you missed a payment! This brings the little charges to the top.

The obvious answer is cost, however I find they really don't understand that cyber security begins with the employee and ends with the software or hardware solution. Most don't understand their exposure to breaches or what constitutes a breach. Many say "we are to small to be attacked", which is a complete fallacy. When onboarding a customer we usually find everything from Crypto miner software to bot networks. We also implement things like "Office365 Best Practices" which includes login monitoring, it not unusual to find an email account has been hacked and there are multiple logins from outside the US.

It also allows large file transfers, automatic notification of messages being opened, prevents the forwarding of the message without your approval..lots more features.

The only recoverable answer to ransomware is a backup solution that is configure to not allow network users access. Typically we setup both a local and offsite for disaster recovery. Snapshots should be taken as often as the system will allow to reduce the data loss...there will be data loss, just how much depends on the snapshot interval. You need todecide what your recovery time needs to be, typically we do 1 hours unless the hardware wont allow it because it out dated. FIrewalls, antivirus, user education are all good but will not protect your data. What's your data worth, the terrorist will set the terms so be prepared. I have seen them ask for $100 to $40k, would you survive?

Need to do an evaluation before actually offering firm advice, that being said we have moved most of our clients to a host server and vm's for the actual server products. This allows us to do two things, first create a domain controller and/or file server. The second server is an actual remote desktop server where the users can access the line of business apps or file share from the outside. We are an HP shop so that's what we quote.
