If its local, YouTube targeted ads are great and cheap, GMB pages generate 3-15 warm leads per day so I have new customers literally everyday :) If you know a youtube marketing specialist (I do) he ranks multiple videos on page one of YT and google within a 25 mile radius and that drives a ton of traffic for me :)
Our number one way to promote our business, is with our current client base. When you service your clients with their best interest at heart, they refer others to you. Our motto has always been "service service service!". We will never be the biggest exchange, but we strive to be the best and our clients recognize that.
I have been in business for almost 3 years now. I started with NO customers/Accounts. I when door to door asking to speak with the Director of Food Services, Chef or GM. I currently have over 30 accounts and still growing.
I believe after you get the first few accounts and doing a great job, Word-of-Mouth has help me more then anything else.
This may sound weird, seeing as how just about every avenue has been mentioned so far to promote a business, however for us one of the best ways to promote our business is to do a quality job that impresses our clients in a way that gets them to recommend us to their friends/family and associates. It is counter-intuitive to continue to throw money down the advertising drain if our track record is not that great, and if we do a lousy job we know what the outcome will.
When we have done a job to their satisfaction, we always ask if they would tell others about us. Word of mouth may be the oldest way to promote, but it stands the test of time we do believe and it can make or break a business.
By far, my most effective method is word-of-mouth. People who work with me recommend me to others.
My website and social media are all effective tools for building awareness and showing off my work (video production), but at the end of the day, I close more sales through face-to-face meetings.
I have found that the number one way to promote my business is by doing what is right for the client. Find out what their needs and goals are and what they want to accomplish in life. Educate them on thinking outside of the box of conventional financial thinking. Create trust with them because if a client does not trust you they will never do business with you. If what you have done for them satisfies their want and needs and what they want to accomplish they will refer you to their friends, family, and business partners. Do what is in the best interest of the client not yours!
Word of Mouth. Nothing beats your own words. Your going to have alot of oh who cares about his selling speech. But you will also have serious buyers that want an item or services. They will listen to your speech. They may not buy that day or they may buy something after your selling sh-peel. Or they may come another day or contact you another day for something they may need because you used your word of mouth and gave them your contact info. And thats just only 1 of many ways. Examples, marketing, advertising, internet, web-site, hiring sales-people, hiring other companies to promote your products. Im sure you will find ways to promote your business...
We promote our Business on Networking Events, Social Media, Search Engines, Direct Mails, Billboards and BNI.
To be honest there is NO number 1 way to promote a Business. We tried different ways of promoting and the results vary on the time of year and the product/service we promote.
The most important thing from my point of view is consistency with your promotions, it just does not work if you do a "one time shot". You need a plan for your marketing efforts and be able to measure the results.
Depending on your type of Business there may be some creative ways to promote yourself - eg. Wi-Fi Marketing, Loyalty Programs, ...
I take care of my clients showing them; 1. a value in my service, 2. that I care about them and, 3. that I have their best interest in mind when I advise them of their insurance needs. I explain their coverage in a way that they can understand what they have, because I can remember before I became and insurance agent I did not understand my policies either. With their comprehension, they can understand why I am making the recommendations that I make to secure their coverage to best protect them. By doing this my clients then start working for me referring their friends and family. Because they see that I truly do have their best interest in mind.
I totally agree with Maury's response. One other thing that I believe most people in sales do is to ask for referrals with your current/past clients. I also make it a habit of whenever I meet someone I ask them what kind of work do they do and that opens the door for them to ask you the same question. I got a deal from talking to a Uber driver and letting him know what I do.
