Sell and live on the value and benefit you (you and your Organization) uniquely bring.  there will always be someone  cutting and leading with price. Let them. And you are spot on - interview questions have become over used and redundant in many cases. Have you tried: If you could do anything - what would that be? (what is their passion) When an employee comes in late or just in at the nick of time and leaves while the closing whistle is still blowing - on a regular basis, What reasons might that person have for doing so?  - and Follow up question - Do you think that behavior is unfair to the company and other hard working employees? Why?  Have you or do you do any volunteer associated activities? (level of caring/do they support and help without looking for direct return >> good to know)  Five years ago - is this where you thought you would be today?  >> Follow up >> Can you explain why you think that is? (have they set goals before? Do they follow through?) Hope this was of help

Taking the motto from BNI - Givers Gain! - Help other businesses - that you align well with - grow and succeed. Help enough people get what they want and you will always get what you need/want. Pay it forward - be the person others want to know!

Promoting/marketing at this time of year can be dicey - especially if it is treated in similar fashion to promoting projects throughout the rest of the year. People and business owners are no exception, have a lot going on this time of year - lots to see, much to catch the eye. So, its easy for your promoting to get lost in the holiday shuffle. But its still a good time to promote and market. Perhaps you take the time to promote/thank one of your favorite customers' from this past year? This gets your name out too. Considering it is the season of giving - what charity or act of giving can you or your company do/perform (while wearing company shrits) that will make an impact in the local community? The issue? - its on how you market and promote at this time of year. Not that you don't.

While this is you giving a referral vs. asking - I have found that by helping in that fashion - especially if the customer was helped by your referral - that you stand to strengthen your relationship with that business owner and open up the door to a flood of referrals down the road. So, look to give to get.
