There are many ways to cope. Firstly, I think we should learn and understand the "rules" of how to not get Covid19: a) don't touch your face, Covid19 can enter our bodies through our eyes, nose or mouth. b) Always know where your hands are; keep them clean at all times, if you touch something, clean your hands with foamy soap and/or a Purell type product. c) understand that Covid19 is a virus, it cannot move or transport itself, we have to do that. It is a protein surrounded by fat, the fat layer protects it from disintegrating when exposed to air; when we wash with a soap or Purell type product, we are destroying the virus and make it inert. There are many videos online about this.
Secondly, once we understand these rules, obey them and be aware. Knowledge is empowering! Now we can focus on us; find your stress releasers, ie: yoga, meditation, exercise, dancing, cooking, reading, communicating with friends digitally, painting, jigsaw puzzles, etc. Find what works for you and DO IT! Don't let fear rule you, knowledge overcomes fear.
We are zealous in providing the cleanest environment for our patients. Research shows that chiropractic adjustments improve immune function. We also discuss proper nutrition, vitamin supplements and hydration to improve immune function as well. We all know, a positive mental attitude is essential for our mental and physical health.

I initially injured my L5 disc as a college gymnast. At that time, I first sought a medical solution and had a CAT scan (MRI was not available back then). After being told my options were surgery or bed rest with traction for a long time, I then consulted with a chiropractor as well as a PT. Both did more thorough exams than the orthopedist did and explained their different approaches. I ultimately chose chiropractic and get great results and was able to return to gymnastics without limitations. I have since had numerous exacerbations and continue always seek proper diagnosis first before choosing the appropriate health care; and so far it has always been chiropractic adjustments with chiropractors that have extensive experience with complicated spinal conditions as well as a comprehensive spinal stabilization exercise regimen. I continue to be unlimited in all of my activities. This experience is also why I chose to become a chiropractor! My lumbar problem is not fixable but totally managed with ongoing chiropractic care and my exercise regimen. This is the quality level of care I provide to our patients; Diagnosis first, then prognosis and treatment plan follows.

After fully evaluating a patient via consultation, examination and appropriate diagnostic testing; an adjustment can be performed via many different techniques. With the primary goal of restoring normal nerve function and spinal biomechanics and alignment; adjustments can be performed with varying amounts of force from very mild and gentle to increased speed. Adjustments can performed with adjusting tools, fulcrums, pressure; most techniques are manual. Providing the appropriate adjustment to the specific patient is where a doctors skill, experience and art come into play; based on patient need, findings, co-morbidities and complaints. Patients should ask questions, review a doctors CV and experience and ask about previous experience with specific complaints.

There are many reasons to take xrays. Patient safety is paramount and of course we look for fractures, tumors, malformed bones, arthritis, and other structural changes that will effect how we take care of our patients. Depending on what is seen, there are times referrals to appropriate specialists may be appropriate. As a chiropractor with advanced training in spinal biomechanics, I also want to see spinal alignment, and biomechanical coupling to determine any movement pathologies that also need to be addressed. Xrays can also be used to evaluate the integrity of the spinal ligaments that support proper movement and/or may be torn or stretched due to a trauma. Xrays can also clearly indicate degenerative changes to the vertebrae, discs and supporting structures that also effect care and the speed of progress. All of this information is used to help create a proper personalized diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan.

There is a time and place for all therapies, including surgery. Having said that, it is my opinion that all non surgical therapies should be tried first and there is mounting research and evidence that addressing pathologic spinal biomechanics is the most effective therapy to address spine pain. Chiropractors are the only profession that are trained to evaluate and change spinal biomechanics and within our profession (like in medicine) there are specialists with extensive post graduate training that specialize in trauma, disc and nerve injuries. In our office we provide many non surgical therapies; chiropractic care, physical therapy, trigger point therapy, massage, muscular re-education and spinal strengthening and mindfulness. We are also aware that there are injuries and conditions that require surgery and we have relationships with the best neurosurgeons for the purpose of consulting with and referring to.
Of course the other consideration is where patients receive their guidance and depending on the doctors they are consulting, they may not get truly open minded recommendations and/or they are looking for a quick fix. Currently, spinal surgery does not currently offer a great outcome, except for some specific conditions.

The basic rule is to perform a complete history, physical exam and if appropriate take x-rays, computerized range of motion testing and other diagnostic testing to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. First we must accurately diagnose because the correct diagnosis helps create a proper prognosis and treatment plan. Of course, in the course of care, other diagnostic tests may be appropriate to further differentially diagnose a problem and change a treatment plan, refer to other types of care and update a prognosis. The newest technology can assist in creating a more accurate diagnosis when appropriate, and I would think not only chiropractors but all health care providers would embrace technology when helpful. Of course, there are also new technologies that are not as effective as marketed and it is our job to stay abreast of advances so we can determine their value to us and our patients.

I feel that there are multiple ways, of course creating good communication among healthcare professionals is now essential. Having excellent credentials, training and experience helps differentiate one healthcare provider from another and the doctors that refer to me are aware of my extensive post graduate continuing education. I also make a practice of always sending my initial exam findings and treatment goals back to the referring doctor.
