About Us

There was once a young 19 year old sergeant in the US Army who was deployed. One evening, the Red Cross reached out to say that the sergeant was going home on Emergency Leave; his Dad, a Marine Corps Veteran of WWII in the Pacific. was gravely ill. The soldier’s Dad was his hero and mentor, so he left for home. After a short visit with his hero, the soldier’s Dad slipped in to a coma and never woke up.

There was only a small life insurance policy for the family and now the soldier's Mom had to raise 3 younger siblings alone. The soldier swore that one day he would be in a position to help families avoid this disastrous situation, and to this day he does exactly that, helping families avoid similar financial disasters.

How do I know this story? The 19 year old soldier was me, Jack Shinn and the Marine was my Dad. And we are here to help your family avoid the pitfalls an unplanned, unexpected loss of a bread winner way too early in life can cause.

The acquaintance agreed to an appointment and became a client. A few weeks later, the new client saw his next door neighbor walking down the street pushing a baby carriage with a new baby inside. The new client went out his door and literally chased his neighbor down the street to talk to her about our services and to give her one of my business cards. Long story short, the woman pushing the baby carriage and her family have now been customers since that time (almost 20 years ago), and we just shipped that infant daughter to University of Maine. We assisted the family in the College Process and worked with them to find an affordable college for their daughter. Because of following a logical process when shopping for a college, the family is on the hook for about $1700 a year for their daughter's education and their family and mine are now close friends. Friends, you cannot make it up.

We use a combination of free public workshops (under the auspices of SOFA (Society of Financial Awareness), strict adherence to a calling schedule, and web site content generation. Our public workshops are conducted for two different audiences. The first audience is composed of parents of students during the college application process. We help them determine what colleges will expect the family will pay annually, assistance with the Common App regarding essay prep and document review, and FAFSA filing and also challenging FAFSA results where appropriate. Our second audience for our workshops is composed of folks approaching retirement and stresses the process of determining when is the best time for seniors to claim their Social Security Benefits. We also provide guidance in other retirement issues such as determining what the Long Term Care need is and how best to meet the need, taxation during retirement, RMD analysis, Medicare, etc. We stick to a set schedule for phone reach outs, and we also generate content from our web site to folks who attend our workshops, after getting their approval to add them to our contact list. That's what we do to keep the pipeline open.

After they make the plunge, and actually agree that they need the service, collecting the checks is pretty simple. Also, remember, in financial education there is one or more initial visits where the imparting of knowledge about a particular process, such as College Planning, is undertaken. Once the client agrees to accept help to navigate the process, agreed upon payments are pretty simple.

Helping to educate families about navigating financial issues seems to be a great way to meet new prospects and add more clients.

Depending on your income level, there is no reason you could not do both. If that is not possible, I would make sure you were putting aside a bit for yourself. As that money grows, you could then make periodic payments on your debt. (more) Depending on your income level, there is no reason you could not do both.
