Lot's of failure out there. Over expectations of income and lack of capital to sustain for the start up. Everybody agrees on that.
I have seen a restaurant location that has failed over and over again. Not sure why but nothing can exist in this location even though it is not a bad location as for as proximity to population. Point being history of a location is worth a look. Wrong side of the street for a coffee shop is a good example of choosing a proper location as well. What direction is the morning traffic traveling? Ask yourself is this accessible for my customers and if not can I afford to improve that? Do I want to perhaps want to own a location in the future and if so is the property I am looking at available? Rent will go up and this can often end a good business when things are just starting really pay off.
I am a merchant and have bought out many stores that have failed and the remaining inventory is very telling. A deal is only a deal if it isn't behind in trends and technology. Distributors are selling this stuff at a discount for a reason. Be sure you don't become their warehouse as that is the push for most manufacturers. They use programs like SAP. This is a manufacture on demand program that keeps products balanced in a perfect world. It relies on proper data input. When this doesn't go well your store is the target for overages.
Buy for your customer is number one as your tastes are probably not your customers. If you don't watch this one you will have a great museum with no sales happening. You have to balance this as if you are excited about a product you will sell it.
Have fun with your business because it will consume much of your time. Nobody wants to deal with unhappy people so think hard about life quality and money to try to balance things.
Word of mouth is number 1. If you are new you need to get involved in local community organizations that you can meet other business owners. Small stores will often recommend other small business services. Social media is great for newcomers to your area especially the teen to 45 age group.
