(more) I own a photography business so I don't know how well my experience translates to the restaurant business, but direct mail is still the vehicle that drives customers to the door. Especially in the social media age, having an attractive printed piece they can hold in their hands has a lot more impact than an instagram post. Here are some things I've learned: The list is KEY. Direct mail is too expensive (a least the way I do it) for a shotgun approach. The direct marketing pieces I send reflect my upscale brand, and may cost as much as a dollar or more to produce. I can't afford to send them to unqualified prospects... so acquiring and building a good list is the hardest part. This is a topic unto itself. as it is becoming harder and harder. Repetition is crucial. If you can only afford to mail once... save your money. Your prospects need to hear from you regularly, as timing is often a crucial factor. The first 3 times they hear from you they may not be in the market for what you offer.... but they may be later. Repetition builds brand awareness. Don't forget a compelling offer and a time limited call to action. The coupon that never expires is the one that never gets used! It can be tricky with the uncertainty of direct mail delivery windows to keep a tight reign on limited time offers, but providing a window of maybe a week is doable. The worst thing is having a "One Day Sale" offer arrive that was over yesterday. Be concious of the fact that the PO can sit on your piece for a while if they feel like it.
