One thing my parents instilled in me very early was not to tell lies. That has stayed with me my entire life. I am now 53 years old. As a small business owner, I am surprised at how many people lie to me, especially our employees. That makes me sad. When going through the new-hire orientation, I always tell the new employee that I will be honest with them and will never lie to them and that I expect the same from them. I wish I could say that they reciprocate. I want to share one of the best lessons on why it is so important not to tell lies. One of our delivery drivers called off his shift on a busy Saturday night. He told me that he had "totaled his car and that he was in really bad shape and wasn't going to make it in." I told him to take care of himself and to keep me posted on how he was doing. Roughly 20 minutes later, a young man came in to my restaurant to pick up food. He said he drives quite a distance to pick up our "delicious food and take to his friend's house to eat at the lake." I said, "Who is your friend?" He said, "His name is Nick. He is one of your drivers." I said, "Nick? The same Nick who just called off today stating that he was in a really bad car accident?" Just then, the young man at my counter looked very uncomfortable, started shifting his eyes away from me, paid for his food very quickly and left the store. About 15-20 minutes later, the same young man came back to my store to tell me that he had spoken with Nick and "he's in rough shape, but doing better, but that he is afraid you're going to fire him." I just shrugged my shoulders at that point. On the way home that evening, my husband and I drove by Nick's parents' home (which is on our way home) and saw a huge party going on with all kinds of cars in the driveway. Their boat was out on the water and it seemed like everything was okay. A few days later, my husband and I were at an ice cream stand after work one evening (while wearing our uniforms) and two little girls ran up to us and said that their brother worked for us. We asked their brother's name and they said it was "Nick." We asked them, "How is Nick doing? We heard that he was in a really bad car accident and totaled his car." Both girls looked at us, tilted their heads, looked confused, and didn't say anything. We asked again, "Is Nick okay? Did he get into a bad car accident?" Just then, they both shook their heads and ran off to their parents in the crowd. I can't prove any lies in that story, but the way the people reacted when we asked about Nick was sketchy, to say the least. I always say . . . Don't lie. It may not come out right away, but it will come out eventually.
