As a photography studio and wedding chapel we use a combination multi-prong approach. Having a professional website that is appealing and has effective SEO is a starting point. Bridal shows (or shows that relate to your business) are a great way to see a lot of prospective clients in a short amount of time and the leads generated are crucial to follow up with. Search for your type of business and see which sites appear first. If possible join the site and get a free listing and consider upgrading for better exposure. If you already have past clients, mail them a "thank you" post card and remind them of their past experience with your company and give them a promotion they can redeem with you. If you have a unique industry or activity consider contacting the local media for them to do a news story which is free to you and helps them as well. Google ads and Yelp are also excellent ways of getting you seen online.

Owning a business means wearing many hats, some of which fit well and others that are uncomfortable and unfamiliar. Most small business owners start their business to be their own boss and do what it is they love, which in my case is photography. Equally important however is learning the details of running a successful business that will allow you to keep doing what you love and actually have a life. There are many details that can take away from the joy of why you started your business in the first place. It's easy to think you can save money by doing everything yourself and this to me is the most stressful part of being a business owner. The key is doing what you do well and focus on what it is that creates your customer base. Have the wisdom to contract out the rest to professionals in their fields such as bookkeepers, marketers etc.

I have never used printed calendars to do so, but I can see how they might make a good gift for prior clients who you want to get back in touch with. If they use the calendar then they will be reminded of your studio all year. You'd want to use a company that provides high quality images but order enough volume to get a good price. I'd consider having specials listed on the calendar throughout the year so they will see those and be prompted to contact you. Be cautious about using images of clients though unless you have a specific model release, as this crosses into the category of advertising and they could potentially sue you. So scenic, generic - art photography (even if you do portraits and weddings) might be the best way to get around that issue. If you know the clients though and have done multiple sessions in the past, and you wanted to do a personal one just for them with images from a session or sessions over the years that would get a lot of notice and appreciation and I would think referrals too.
Good luck!
Wedding clients usually find me through online searches. Also bridal shows such as the one we are participating in on Sunday. And word of mouth of course is huge.

An addendum to my previous response. We started our photography and wedding chapel business at the height of the economy 2005-2006 so our predicted revenue was strongly affected when the economy crashed 2007 2008. Talk about fear - lol. The key, no matter what you are doing or how the economy...

An addendum to my previous response. We started our photography and wedding chapel business at the height of the economy 2005-2006 so our predicted revenue was strongly affected when the economy crashed 2007 2008. Talk about fear - lol. The key, no matter what you are doing or how the economy is doing is to be tuned in to what the industry you are involved with is doing and be flexible enough to change your business model to grow and match what the consumer wants and needs. That was a challenging time indeed but it taught us a lot about ourselves and we doubled-down on our commitment to succeed.
